Hi Hugh, While I loved Joanna's part (Kiss Me was the name?) in the original quartet, I was surprised that I didn't miss it all that much from this song. I wonder why they chose to cut that song completely. I'd be interested to hear the reason why some day. I loved Len Cariou. Unlike George Hearn, he invoked pitty from me when I saw the play. I think I saw more sorrow in Len Cariou. After seeing some clips, I see that Depp does as well. I guess you are missing the strong professional singing voice? That in itself IS gripping.
Hi Nick! I think the reason Joanna's part was cut was because she was reprising her part in the number "Kiss Me" which was (regretably, I feel) cut from the film version. BTW, I envy you saw Len Cariou as Todd, I met the man only recently (he's the son-in-law of a friend of mine), and I found him quite charming. And yes, I am missing the strong professional singing voice, although Depp does do a very moving job.
Living near Broadway ,and it being affordable back then, I got to see the play 3 times, back then. I found it interesting that I felt so little for George Hearns Sweeney. Where-as Len Cariou drew me in with his performance as well as his voice. As beautiful as Hearns voice is , there was a wall up between us for some reason. No big point here...just interesting.
But I'm so glad there is a dvd version of the play. Just wish it was Len instead.
Ya wanna laugh? I wasn't having any problems with the new movie voices until I heard Sacha Baron Cohen/Pirelli sing. I really loved the stage singing voice. Pirelli of all characters...Go figure...lol

WOW!!!
Thankyou so much for this. I am SO relieved to hear how beautiful that song remained in this film version.
Whew.
Except - I beg your pardon - Johannah's part was cut. And I've been listening to the audio clips currently on the website, and although Depp has a nice singing voice so far it hasn't gripped me like George Hearns, Len Cariou or Ross Petty did.

If this is indeed from the movie soundtrack, it allays a lot of fears about how the singing will sound. I think we're absolutely right to be confident that the result is going to be amazing and I'm really counting down the weeks and days until the release.
Many thanks for posting this, tonip.
