Here are some details from SNOW about anti-war activities this week and weekend.

----------------

Please forward as appropriate.

There are a number of events to mark the 4th anniversary of the U.S. invasion/occupation of Iraq to chose from. I urge you to choose several and attend (see below). Let's make sure we don't have to commemorate a 5th time and End the War NOW.

SNOW (with many other groups including Church Council of Greater Seattle, Jobs with Justice, Comite Pro Amnistia, LELO, MLK County Labor Council) is sponsoring the March 19th Ending the War Begins at Home! event. The event begins at 3 pm on Monday at the new Federal Courthour (7th and Stewart). We will march past the City Council Building (where there is an anti-war resolution pending) and on to the Federal Building for a rally at 5 PM.

WE NEED YOUR HELP. We need help doing outreach over the next 5 days. We need people willing to help on the 19th as peacekeepers and bucket brigade (money collectors).

Trained peacekeepers are needed. A peacekeeper orientation will be held on Thursday, March 15, 6-8 pm at the offices of Comite Pro Amnistia (2021 S Weller St, just east of 19th). Call 206-789-2684 if you can't make that orientation but are available on the 19th.

We also need bucket brigade (money collectors) to help raise the funds to cover the costs of the event. Call 206-789-2684 to volunteer.

You can get more information at www.wsjwj.org or 206-789-2684.

4th Anniversary Events

THURSDAY 3/15-MON 3/19:

FIVE DAY WALK FOR PEACE: SEATTLE

Peace Action invites you to join us on a five day walk for peace in and

around Seattle, from March 15 to 19.

March 19 marks the fourth anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq. The most

credible study of deaths due to the war showed that roughly 655,000 Iraqis

had been killed by last July. We'll walk 655,000 steps--248 miles--to

remember the cost of this war, and to give the people of the Seattle

metropolitan area a chance to take a few steps for peace.

The walk will begin in downtown Seattle and wind through most of the

neighborhoods in our region, traveling 24 hours a day and ending Monday 19th

at the coalition-sponsored rally and march to the Seattle City Council,

where we'll join a large crowd of people to urge the Council to pass a

resolution opposing the war.

Everyone is invited to walk for a mile or a day, or just to drop in to talk

about how America can increase our security by decreasing our militarism,

and how you can connect with the neighborhood peace group in your community.

Participants will walk, distribute literature, inform people about upcoming

events and meetings of their neighborhood's local peace group, and help

people find ways to be effective advocates for peace and justice.

Local peace groups, churches and religious congregations, schools, youth

groups and other organizations and individuals are encouraged to contact

Peace Action to participate in your neighborhood. To join or help out,

contact me at

freefred@drizzle.com. For more information, visit http://655000stepsforpeace.blogspot.com.

Re: people ducking out of the issues...  Reply with quote

To:911visibilityprojectaction@lists.riseup.net
Subject: [911 Visibility Project Action] Visibility

Hello,

At the Jan. 27 anti-war rally, I talked to one woman who was handing
out 911 info (and holding a very small "sign"). She said she was there
on her own, and I didn't spot any sign or banner, or anyone else
handing out literature on this issue.

Including myself.... There is always some immediate issue to act on,
and 911-truth stuff tends always to go on the back burner somehow. Of
course, the war is an immediate horror that has to be opposed, and
I've been involved with counter-recruitment, supporting war resisters,
etc. And there are important social and economic issues that must be
addressed. But I'm getting totally sick and tired of hearing
administration officials throwing out the same phrases — "since 9/11 —
it's a post-9/11 world — the lessons of 9/11" — etc., over and over
again, justifying every foreign or domestic atrocity they commit. As
long as they can promote this bogus "war on terror," they can put out a
smokescreen behind which they continue the slaughter in Iraq and do
NOTHING to address the other issues.

As well, I'm getting sick and tired of progressives/leftists (my crowd)
ducking away from any mention of the issue, with facial expressions as
if they've seen a rattlesnake and don't want to get bitten.

There is another anti-war rally coming up (don't have the info handy,
but I think it's sponsored by ANSWER, and I believe it's on March 1Cool.
THIS TIME, my contribution will be to hand out leaflets on 9/11 and
have a (probably home-made) sign as well. I downloaded and made copies
of the half-size sheet "The Independent Thinker's 9/11 Fact Sheet."
I'd like to be part of a "9/11 truth" contingent — very visible. I
hope others are considering this too.

A letter from a photo journalist who documents protests  Reply with quote

I’ve wondered for so long what words would need to be said to a bush supporter to get them to realize that the path he is leading us down will lead to our doom. How do you convince someone bent on following their faith that there are facts out here to be observed, all you have to do is open your eyes. Then I thought maybe it’s my eyes that need to be open before I could find the answer. Then I thought only they can open their own eyes. Then I thought there is no they there is only we.

What are the answers? How can we learn? Are there answers?

We are searchers of the lost. Yet the answers are right before our eyes: In every indigenous culture we swallow up.

God is everything. God makes up everything. God made every thing. God is nature. Nature is god. Are we not made by god of god? Are we not a unique as any soaring eagle? Are we not as timeless as any pristine redwood grove? Are we not as magnificent as any brilliant dolphin? Are we not beautiful? We need to not hate ourselves anymore. We can re-find what we’ve lost: our connection to that which surrounds us. Life.

God are the strings and the songs that move them. My strings, the ones that make up my body, have been here since the Earth’s birth. What I am will be here until the sun breaths it’s final breath. I, as are we all, eternal in nature’s light. That is what brings me peace, that is what makes me want a future for our ever so untamable species. Here is the time of choice. Here is the fork in the road. What end would you choose.

There is no floating deity in the sky commanding all our moves.

The answer is choice, but more, perception and the responsibility that we take for our choices and our perceptions.

There is no why; there is only the moment, love the moment: that is the meaning of life.

If we were to, say, replace God with Nature in the bible every time it is written, what would then be the world perception of our relationship with earth?
Would we love her more? Would we take her less for granted?
It really does come down to choice of perception.
Then again, there was a time once, when speaking with my brother, that he asked ,in not so many words, why don’t you just believe in God, just in case it’s real, then you have your bases covered.
I said to him that it just doesn’t work that way. I know it’s not real and I can’t convince myself to believe ,just in case, it would be a lie .And I would know, and if God is real, and a thinking sentient being , I’m pretty sure it would figure it out too.
But if it is about choice…?
It’s weird; it’s just that once your eyes are open you can’t close them again. It’s like believing in Santa the year after you found out that he’s not real. You want to believe so badly, but you know it’s just a dream, pretend.
I remember waking up. I don’t remember the exact thoughts it’s just a swirl of emotion and tiny pictures of the event. I remember crying at how blind I had been. It was like I had made a conscious effort to close off my life to the outside reality when my son was born. Then one night, at a sports convention of all places, I realized that I had been asleep; sleeping for seven years, with my eyes wide open. It was among the weirdest and most relieving and most painful of experiences that I’ve ever had.
So, now I’m awake. Now what?
I feel like Neo in the Matrix. Do I wish I had taken the red pill?
There is something to be said for “ignorance is bliss”. There is a lot of despair and hopelessness to be dealt with on the other side of informed. I feel almost crazy sometimes, how is it that I see it all so differently. Maybe we are supposed to be rulers and conquerors of the world. Maybe it is winner take all.
My question to the “right” is: why can’t we agree to disagree on the form and concentrate on the content?
I’m sure I’ve heard somewhere that a rich man has as much chance of getting into heaven as a camel has of going through the eye of a needle.
And what about the sermon on the mountain? Hello.
I’m pretty sure that Jesus would be against even the mighty America having nuclear weapons.
So, why the cognitive dissidence? Could it be we are creating a self-fulfilling prophesy of Armageddon? Could it be that the original sin was not eating the apple but severing our ties with earth and nature, god? We are damned to pay for that sin until we make amends. Our punishment is to think of ourselves as impure and imperfect: different, outcasts of nature’s garden of life everlasting. How totally fucking sad: To think of yourself as an eternal sinner. No wonder you people sin so much, it’s who you perceive yourselves to be. That is so fucking sad. I don’t think I could go on if I hated my retched existence that much. No wonder you turn to religion. No wonder you turn to alcohol or TV or food. No wonder you fight to defend your faith to the death. No wonder you go door to door, the more people who believe, the more likely it is to be true, right? How hopeless and helpless you must feel, knowing you will cause Armageddon, knowing that there is nothing you can do, you are and ever will be a sinner destine to destroy the world. Oh my god (figure of speech) it must be by far the saddest fucking existence that there is.
I don’t say this to mock you far from it. I want so despratly to reach you but I can’t figure out how to put it into words.
We are all spiritual beings. It is why we are drawn to religion because we want to be connected so despratly that we will believe anything as long as it will fill up the void left by the severed connection to earth and nature.

Power is a tool and can be used for help or harm, if a balance is not struck between the two, eventually a balance will be forced. Hmmmm Global warming?

Another path is available to us than the one that we have carved out of the earth. We are fighting an age old battle. There are two sides. But wat if both are wrong? What if both messeges passed down through the ages have been scewed by man’s greed and hunger for power? What if there is a third option. One of balance. Not only balance of distribution but balance in philosophy and connection. To truly understand our roots. The ones we hunger for we look only to our human history. But what of our true origin. The earth herself. Where is the balance struck here. We look to religion to fulfill our spiritual quests and forget that the greater includes all.
Both sides that fight today prophesy doom and destruction for our sins. Armogeddon. This does not have to be the path. There is another way. Equality and balance. It is the only future.

MUSIC SUBCULTURE INTERVIEW & COMMENTARY  Reply with quote

I was on the next level forums where they have a whole forum devoted to the Hip Hip group called the Coup and the album cover they used which had images of the 911 towers blowing up before it happened....

I present the interview and some additional thoughts which might help us to bring a few things into view, both about subculture and truth movements.

Pick a Bigger Weapon
By Zoneil Maharaj, Pop and Politics. Posted March 22, 2006.

Interview: Politically-minded emcee, Boots Riley, from the Coup talks about why he became an activist, BET today, and his new album.

PandP: Why the title "Pick a Bigger Weapon"?

Boots: It means "up the ante." And the reason I used "Pick a Bigger Weapon" is because I think that we're all fighting the system whether we feel like we're in the struggle or not, and that fight takes the form of struggling to pay the rent, trying to keep the lights on, things like that. Those are the struggles we all should be engaged in collectively. It's about taking our daily struggles and collectivizing them and it would be a stronger blow to the system.

Also, my girlfriend and I were having dinner with poet Jessica Care Moore and my girlfriend was on her third or fourth martini and Jessica was like, "C'mon girl, pick a bigger weapon." That's symbolic of people looking for ways to make their lives better and right now we've been taught to overlook actually fighting the system together to make our life better.

"Pick A Bigger Weapon" drops on April 25, 2006. Boots is also currently working on the "Instigators" album with political hip-hop group Dead Prez.

Zoneil Maharaj is not as old as he looks and not as young as he acts. He is a student at San Francisco State University.

WITHOUT THE SPIRITUALITY INTRODUCED TO THEM, FROM THE EAST, BACK IN THE 60'S WHEN MONKS FIRST STARTED COMING FROM TIBET.... THEY HAVE NO IDEA OF THE EGO AND HOW IT WORKS AGAINST THEIR UNITY. SOMEHOW, HIP HOP BECAME MATERIALISTIC AND NOW YOU HAVE ALL THESE WHAT SHOULD BE COMMUNITY FIGURES PROMOTING SCION WHO USES HIP HOP TO PROMOTE CARS. THEY FLOOD THE STATES WITH FREE HIP HOP CDS, AND IT KILLS OUR ABILITY TO CREATE WORD OF MOUTH MAIL ORDER DISTRIBUTION...

HIP HOP NEED TO GET ON THE MIC AND DEFEND THE BACK PACKING BBOYS ON LOW BUDGET TOURS, WHO ALSO NEED TO GET ON THE MIC AND BACK UP THE FACT THAT WE ALL NEED TO GET INVOLVED..... THAT MEANS SHARING HOMES AND FOOD AND RESOURCES AND KNOWLEDGE.

PEOPLE ARE JUST COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO RATHER GO TO THE SHOW ALONE, OR NOT MEET NEW PEOPLE AT THE SHOW.....

DOES THE ENTIRE CULTURE NEEDS REORIENTED BY THE 911 TRUTH MOVEMENT? OR DOES IT NEED TO PUT THE TRUTH MOVEMENT INTO BETTER SHAPE? WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE TWO WOULD RECOGNIZE EACH OTHERS PURPOSES?

MANY ARTISTS DON'T SPEAK OUT AT FESTIVALS WHICH ARE NOT REALLY DOING ANY ACTIVISM, BECAUSE THAT THE ONE OR TWO THAT PAY THEM A YEAR TO PERFORM. SO NO REAL ACTIVISM GOING ON AT THE FESTIVALS EITHER.

October 28: Anti-Imperialist Feeder March & Contingent  Reply with quote

I liked that this one wasn't on the date of 21, 22 or 23...

Here is what they have on their website:

About SAIC
The Seattle Anti-Imperialist Committee (SAIC) is a democratic committee of anti-imperialist activists in the Seattle area. We work to build working class anti-imperialist consciousness and organization, and oppose the influence of liberal-imperialism and opportunist politics within the progressive movements, particularly the anti-war movement.

SAIC believes that imperialism can only be eliminated through the independent political action of the masses of people—particularly the workers, oppressed nationalities and youth—and not through the “goodwill” or “kindness” of various liberal-imperialist ruling class saviors.

Our website gives readers the ability to publicly post comments, suggestions, questions and criticism of our work. SAIC welcomes and encourages such ideological struggle—which is crucial for the development of a mass, conscious anti-imperialist movment. We can also be contacted via email at mail [at] seattleaic [dot] org.

More on the political orientation of SAIC can be found in our Unity Statement.

http://www.seattleaic.org/?p=42

Unity statement:

Unity Statement:
What is the Seattle Anti-Imperialist Committee?
Published September 17th, 2006 in General Statements
Introduction

The Seattle Anti-Imperialist Committee (SAIC) is a democratic committee of anti-imperialist activists in the Seattle area. It works to build the local anti-war and other progressive movements through raising their level of anti-imperialist consciousness, organization and activity. To date this has involved organizing a feeder march, protest contingents, discussions, postering, and the writing and distribution of leaflets designed to draw more people into political motion. Much of this would have been impossible had we not combined our efforts through SAIC.

But the SAIC still remains at the level of an attempt, an effort, to rally anti-imperialists of Seattle into the kind of force we think they can be. Meanwhile, imperialist wars and oppression continue, with more being planned. Thus we again invite all local anti-imperialists to join with us to deepen and spread the work crying out to be done. Further, we also seek to unite with groups and individuals outside the committee to build marching contingents, demonstrations and other activities while insisting on the right of all partners in such united actions to freely express themselves.

Method

SAIC is composed of people with certain differing analyses of world imperialism and world political forces, and we seek to unite with others who will inevitably have still differing ideas. But we stand united around the anti-imperialist ideas in this document. When disagreements arise over how to implement the tasks implied by these ideas we struggle to seek truth from facts—i.e., to carefully investigate and analyze the issue in question.

Nevertheless, when the movement demands that we act quickly we may think voting on an issue is necessary. When so, the majority rules. Further, although individuals or groups in the committee may have different theories over what the imperialist system should be replaced with, debating this question is not the purpose of the SAIC.

Imperialism

Modern imperialism is rooted in the capitalist system of production where it has reached the stage where giant corporations and banks are merged into huge conglomerates of capital (monopolies) that play the decisive role in global economic life: monopoly capitalism. The laws of the capitalist system of production force these concentrations of wealth to maximize profits through expansion to dominate markets, sources of raw materials, and low-wage labor. Beneath and alongside these dominating conglomerates the old competitive capitalism goes on as well, giving rise to new concentrations of capital and new monopolies whose internal economic laws also demand expansion. The intense contradictions within this world economic system inevitably give rise to wars.

In the imperialist countries the social class owning these monopolies, the monopoly-capitalist class, or bourgeoisie, plays the decisive role in economics, culture, politics, and the state. In the U.S. this is the class whose interests lay behind the “war on terror”, the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, threats of war against Iran, bullying of Latin America, support for the Zionist domination of Palestine, huge war budgets and permanent militarism. The Democratic and Republican parties are its principal political instruments, while the Green Party and others play a special role in fostering illusions that there can be a capitalism without wars and oppression, and of diverting activists away from reliance on mass struggle and toward reliance on electoral politics.

The most economically, politically and militarily powerful among the imperialist powers dominate the United Nations, World Trade Organization, International Monetary Fund and World Bank, which they overall use as tools for imperial interests.

Anti-Imperialism

Anti-imperialist activism means political work targeting the imperialist system as the root cause of wars and other crimes against the masses. It means exposing and opposing the lies and deception of the capitalist political parties and the opportunist leftists who serve them. And, since there are no solutions to be found within the system, it means an orientation toward arousing and uniting the masses of people who suffer from imperialism in struggle against the imperialist ruling class:

The masses of youth who are subjected to a poverty draft and are being used to fight wars for the imperialists
The working-class masses who own nothing but their labor power which they must sell to the capitalists in order to survive, and who are at the same time being used as cannon fodder in imperialist wars for the enrichment of these same exploiters;
The national-minority and immigrant masses who are discriminated against, doubly oppressed and exploited at home, and who are disproportionately sent to kill and be killed abroad.
Our solidarity is with the workers and others exploited and oppressed by capitalism and imperialism in all countries. We popularize and support their struggles against both their local exploiters as well as domination by the U.S. and other imperialist powers. This is an important part of building a politically conscious movement against our main enemy, which is at home.

Opposing Sham Anti-imperialism and Opportunism

Anti-imperialism does not mean inviting liberal politicians and others to tell demonstrators that they should support legal and multilateral imperialist wars as opposed to Bush’s unilateralist wars, or to criticize Bush for weakness in the “war on terror”, or to say the movement should support Iraqi withdrawal plans that always leave U.S. troops in the country for many more months and leave them in the oil-rich region indefinitely. Nor does anti-imperialism mean handing a microphone to liberals like Kucinich so that they can divert activists into working for “peace candidate” election campaigns, and then later tell these activists that they should work to get war-hawks like Kerry elected. Yet these are the opportunist practices of sham anti-imperialists in the major anti-war coalitions.

Moreover, anti-imperialism does not mean supporting reactionary clerical forces, Ba’athists and others just because they are fighting U.S. imperialism. Nor does it mean glossing it over when such reactionary forces seek to accommodate the imperialist powers, collaborate with occupation administrations, and brutally oppress the working people, leftists, women and minority nationalities. But many groups in the movement do precisely these things and call it anti-imperialism—thereby causing great damage to the very idea of anti-imperialism.

The struggle against opportunism and sham anti-imperialism therefore becomes an inseparable part of the struggle to build the movement against imperialism.

With regards to Iraq, for example, real anti-imperialism means supporting the Iraqi people—whether presently armed or unarmed—-both in their struggle against the imperialist occupation as well as their struggle against internal class enemies who work to keep them chained to a reactionary framework, ultimately weakening the struggle against imperialism

Membership and Organization

SAIC members are expected to regularly attend committee meetings, and help advance the committee’s work through leafleting, postering, writing, or in other ways. Anyone is eligible for SAIC membership after attending one meeting, expressing agreement with this Unity Statement, and asking to join. Membership is formalized by the majority vote of the existing members of the committee present at any one meeting. A member who is later found to be violating the conditions of membership may be removed from the committee by a majority vote.

SAIC may elect a Chairperson and a Secretary-Treasurer, both of whom can be recalled at any time by majority vote on a motion which cannot be ruled out of order on the agenda. The Chairperson is responsible for ensuring that meeting locations are found and announced, soliciting items for the agenda, conducting meetings, and calling special meetings. The Secretary-Treasurer is responsible for keeping a record of meetings, recording all decisions, and keeping track of financial contributions and expenses.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY FEEDBACK ON THE MARCH, HOW DID IT GO? WHAT WERE YOUR EXPERIENCES?

NO GAS...On May 15th 2007

Don't pump gas on MAY 15th

In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

On May 15th 2007, all Internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the Internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

If you agree (which I cant see why you wouldn't) resend this to all your contact list. With it saying, ''Don't pump gas on May 15th"

CALL FOR PROTEST AGAINST FOREIGN CORPORATE RULE  Reply with quote

ATTENTION: All peoples of Canada, USA and Mexico! We must ACT now! The time has come for us to get informed on what they don't want us to know.

On August 20-22 there will be a meeting between the leaders of Canada, USA and Mexico in Montabello, Quebec, to RATIFY the Security and Prosperity Pact

The purpose of the upcoming conference is to ratify the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, which was initiated by Bush, Martin and Fox in 2005 in Waco, Texas. Essentially, this so-called ‘partnership’ will result in what the politicians refer to as ‘continental integration’- news speak for a North American Union- and basically a harmonization of 100’s of regulations, policies and laws. Meaning that our sovereignty individual nations will be marginalized.

"There has been an explosion of research and discussion about options for North America, the intensity of the discussion has been greatest in Canada" - This is what they say, yet you nor I have heard about it, we haven't been talking about it... if we were, there would be outrage... and there will be outrage.

This video is directed at Canadians, but in actuality, it is for all citizens of North America because this affects us all! I urge you to watch this video.

"Connie Fogal, the redoubtable leader of the Canadian Action Party, delivers a hard hitting and passionate warning to all who refuse to believe that our democracy is being usurped by an elite few and is being sold off, brick by brick, to the highest bidder. Our very own elected politicians are in collusion with powerful private corporate interests, working together behind closed doors to bring in the ‘Security and Prosperity Partnership’ by “stealth” – as one proponent of the agreement put it – without public knowledge or consultation. In this presentation, she argues that Canadian sovereignty is very much at stake and she urges us to become informed and to take action before we ignorantly surrender all of our freedoms and public services to foreign corporate rule."

There will be a protest in Quebec and Toronto on the 19-22nd against the S.P.P. I highly urge others around North America to organize their own protests on the 19th to pressure our leaders and our governments to stop and think about what they are doing.

In the same way that NAFTA was supposed to be about free trade but turned out to be about free foreign investment, the SPP will not be about closing our borders to terrorists, but keeping our populations closed to freedom and separated from our right to power - the cornerstone of democracy.
