In Burnaby BC where I live here are eagles nesting but I didn't know about it until my neighbours told me there was a nest across the street. Actually, it's only 350 ft from the roof of my bldg. Eagles build nests very close to water, where there are fish but not these eagles! Smile Two miles to Deer or Burnaby Lakes and 3 mi. to the Frazer River or Burrard Inlet.

Well, that's only a 3.5 min flight at 35 mph so I guess they can manage that! Idea Here's a movie and images:

I'm a little slow to get around to this thread but just want to say a big thanks to you, Will, for the great video of "your" eagle's nest. I love that you narrated it... always makes it even better... and I had to laugh out loud right along with you when you mentioned what eagles do best. I haven't laughed since before the Maine storm and ensuing events there, so thank you for that.

Clickable.

I can't see anything any more! That was taken a few days before May 11. I've patrolled the area, looked and listened. Nothing! Perhaps they are still there. Maybe they quit on account of the leaves. I'd like to get the City to chop some branches after awhile, for next yr maybe, if they are gone.

Could be a young pair and made a bad choice.

Will.....darn that tree! that's too bad. Do you really think they aren't around? I know you were afraid of those leaves getting in your way.

Will: I'm very sorry your nest "failed", as they say. They may very well be immature eagles. If this is their first nesting attempt, it's par for the course, nothing to be discouraged about. However -- those leaves are pretty serious. I can't imagine a young eaglet looking out through those and getting the idea of what flight is by watching the parents come and go, etc! Or flying out of there, or coming back in there after they start flying. Maybe the town COULD open up one side of the nest for direct access. Or maybe the eagles will try another tree nearby. They will most likely consider that THEIR territory, and stay in the area.

Sherri:

It may take a long time before I know for sure if both of last year's eaglets are back. I'll have to see the two of them together, as they will probably look alike each year from now on. I'll see one or the other or always only one, but I won't be sure if its the same one or a different one!

I might be able to tell if they roost on their own favorite perches again. The father eagle might not chase them out because the nest the mature pair is using now is further from the river and they may be fishing from the pond instead. It's as close to that nest as the river is.

No, I can't say for certain that they are no longer there. There's a school there but I think it's all converted into a political bldg. I drove right into a playing field once and right on over to that huge bunch of big trees where the nest is. The nest tree was on the far side, actually quite close to a small parking lot off Canada way.

I've observed from there and all angles. Leaves are blocking everything!
I stayed in that play ground for 30 to 45 mins, not nearly long enough of course. Eagles don't fly back and forth very often. I asked some tennis players, adjacent. Their first time there, no help. Stopped a lone jogger who said he was a regular. Didn't see any but perhaps never looks up in the air! Laughing

It's not a regular school, so no students or Principal to ask. That side of the bldg hasn't got many windows either. Low rise apts or something are going up nearby but saw no one to ask.

I tried to drive right around 360 degs, for a close look from all angles but no! A mess of dead end streets on account of the Trans Canada Hwy.

Three places to look and listen: That small parking lot is best to listen because it is 100 ft away. The school yd is the best to sit and watch but they would not fly in through all those trees for very sure. They would approach from that small parking lot but even there, looks too leafed up to get in and out. My roof but I have to stand too long there.

The tree looked OK to them, with no leaves but I expect they got blocked off and left. Not a good clump of trees to try again in either, so I expect it's over.

I'll check the ground under the tree for signs of shells or perhaps even a fallen nest or dead eaglet remains. There is a chance the City would chop some branches for access and I'll ask.

I just got too discouraged to do much of anything but I'll get around to it soon.

Will

Hooray! My eagles are there! Laughing 6:35 AM PDT May15 Tuesday, I just took Koby down for a minute, then went up on the 4th floor and out on the roof. Saw an eagle fly in from the West over that small parking lot I mentioned, right into the tree and caught a glimpse of it landing on the nest, then no sight of anything.

After a minute or so, saw it fly from there to a branch appx 20 ft away and perch. Disappeared again! After another minute or so it flew out the same direction as it went in and vanished. My view as to where it went was blocked by trees.

So, there is now one or more eaglets in that nest!

If I consider a line, parallel to Canada Way as West or 270 degs Azmuth, the eagle came in from appx. 285 degs and that's where I was trying to drive around to for a better look and hit all those dead end streets.

Anyway, I'm not skunked yet! The NE corner of that parking lot will place me nearly under their flight path, perhaps too close. I can get pictures and videos, only of the eagles coming and going from there.

There are no tall bldgs to view from the roof but a few feet west is a shop or business of some kind in a one, maybe two story bldg but again, that's at 270 degs, not 285 where they come in, so I may not see much from there, assuming they let me use the roof and I don't have to crawl through a hole to get up there.

So, there you have it! The tree is about 100% leafed out now and they've got a way in and out. The eaglets will find a way to hop around and practice in there somehow, before they fledge and they can land near the tops of all those trees. The nest is at least half way down, where the trunk is very large and a main branch where the nest is, is 8" in diameter. A very sturdy location!

I'll ask the City about clearing some branches for my view from my roof. A long shot for sure and they'll probably refuse.

Will

Will: I am very excited for you that the eagles are still there!!

Maybe you are breaking fresh ground, with eagles nesting in a hard wood tree, and it leafing out like that!! Smile Evidently their instinct to stay with the eggs and tend to their family was strong enough to keep them there!! It will sure startle people to look up and see bald eagles flying in and out of that bushy tree. I hope some day you'll get a video of them doing it. Don't worry, when the eaglet or eaglets get bigger and hungrier they will have to fly in and out of there more often with food. You won't have to wait so long to catch them coming and going, later on. And both parents may be coming in and out.

As for the Winslow eagles I've been out trying to chase away Central Maine Power line maintenance people who are flying in a helicopter up and down constantly here, for some reason. It's not the normal observation, and upkeep. It's constant back and forth back and forth. Thank goodness the eagles aren't nesting in their usual place, but are further away from the power lines now.

Great news Will!! Very Happy Very Happy I look forward to a video of them flying in or out.

Good luck with the helicopters, Jane. I think if the noise is customary, it doesn't disturb the eagles, for instance in Sidney they are used to planes at the nearby airport and float planes taking off from the bay. But if it is unaccustomed it might be upsetting to them. Luckily as you say they are nesting further from the powerlines this year.

Do you have any idea how old the eaglets could be? I don't think anybody should get near the nest not knowing how old they are.

Thanks for the update, Will, and glad to hear your eagles are still there! I'm not actually sure where you are - is there a source of fish nearby or will they be bringing mostly furry prey to the nest?

Tuesday May 15 07. Eagle in the leaves! My local eagles in Burnaby BC, finally popped out. After seeing on May 14th, from my roof, where they approached from and that they were still there with all those leaves, I went one street north of Canada way and east to the dead end. From there, I got some shots but no sign of eaglets.

Clickable.

Here is a video!
