ODELL LAKE NORTHWEST BALD EAGLE TERRITORY
The Odell Lake Northwest bald eagle site was first identified as an occupied territory in 1974 (Isaacs and Anthony 2007). Over the years five different nests have been documented with all generally located along Highway 58 near the summit of Willamette Pass. The pair has successfully raised young in 21 years since 1974 including a run of 12 twelve consecutive years from 1990 to 2001.
In the fall of 2003 two video cameras were placed in the nest by Phil Allen and Tim Brown (Installation Contractors) under the direction of Don Virgovic, the National Naturewatch Coordinator for the Forest Service and Joan Kittrell, Crescent Ranger District Wildlife Biologist. The intent was to produce live streaming video of bald eagles in a natural habitat setting for educational purposes. One video line was connected to the Metro Zoo in Portland, Oregon for their bald eagle exhibit and the second was linked to a Forest Service website.
In the late-winter or early spring 2003-2004 the bald eagle pair built a new nest above Highway 58 and used that nest in 2004 and 2005. In the early spring of 2006 they returned to the nest with the video cameras and successfully raised one chick. Unfortunately, we had technical difficulties with the cameras and live streaming video was not available until August 2006. In spite of the problems, we were able to witness dramatic video of the adults bringing prey items to the nestling, adult/nestling interactions, and the nestling exercising his wings prior to fledging. By the end of September the adults or nestling rarely returned to the nest.
In the early spring of 2007 it was determined there was an early nest failure. We assume they attempted to nest above Highway 58 in an alternative nest based on the presence of newly placed sticks in the nest. If the cameras are still functioning this winter 2007-2008 we will be able to watch if they attempt to nest in the tree with the cameras and observe egg laying, incubation, and hatching of the young.

| Hi Peggy, I'm expecting a call back from the program leader of the Naturewatch program. I hope he will fill me in on this nest as it is new to me. It's beautiful though and it was snowing earlier today :-) |

Lori, so glad you've been checking in. If the cam is down for me I'll post such, and that way nobody has to wonder if it's a problem with the cam or with their computer.
Birder, glad to see another 'homie' is watching. I've been wondering why Oregon hasn't had an eagle cam. It looks like it may have been worth the wait though...such a beautiful view!
I haven't received a response to the voice mail message I left with the National Naturewatch program leader on October 5th.

While waiting though, I think I've found contact information for the Deschutes National Forest wildlife biologist. I left a voice mail message with Lauri Turner this morning. I explained why I was requesting information; asked about the history of this pair of eagles; inquired as to whether they had nick names, or numbers; asked what we were viewing in the distance, beyond the nest. Does anyone else have questions that she could answer for us when she responds?

Marcia... Those are perfect questions.
I just clicked on the "view behind the scenes photos & videos" and it took me to a great slideshow of them installing the nest cams and also some videos from I would guess to be last year and the eaglet?
The scenery is just gorgeous there in Willamette Pass.
Can't wait to hear the history of the nest... |

Lori, - GREAT find! To view the photos of the nest cam installation and the eagle videos, click on "View behind the scenes photos and videos" as Lori explained. As the short clip of an eagle is playing, click 'Skip Intro' TWICE. Then to the left under Willamette Pass Eagle Cam you can access either the photos or the videos.
Thanks Lori! |

Marcia, I have no idea how I missed the start of this thread .....but I didn't see it until this morning.
I can't get connected with it.... likely has something to do with QuickTime as I have never been able to get anything with it.
any tips?
It looks like a beautiful nest! |

Thanks Judy. I also can't wait to see the eagles.
I received a return call from Lauri Turner. She advised that I should call the wildlife biologist for the specific area of the forest in which these eagles reside. So I have another call to place in order to obtain a history of this pair. Lauri was able to confirm the lake near which these eagles make their nest (which Birder had already figured out). Lauri said that it would be acceptable to mention the name of the lake publicly but not the exact location of the nest.
This is a picture of Odell Lake from the nest - the picture is from the website.
And here is another view of Odell Lake (picture taken on 10/15/06) and info on the lake from the website (it appears that food will not be an issue for these eagles ):
Diamond Peak stands as a sentinel over Odell Lake, one of the blue giants of the Deschutes National Forest. This large lake is 3562 acres, 6 miles long and 1 1/2 miles wide, and reaches a depth of 282 ft. The average depth is 132 ft. which makes it ideal habitat for lake trout (Mackinaw) and bull trout. Rainbow trout, kokanee salmon and whitefish also naturally reproduce in this lake. Odell Lake is managed as a trophy lake trout fishery and has the distinction of the last two state record lake trout being caught here.

karenb, have a look through this to see if you can find the reason for not being able to view the QuickTime stream.
