About this eagle "trio" and their nest...
K01 - Superman ... is the male. He was hatched at the San Francisco Zoo in 2000 and was fostered into the Pinnacle Rock Nest on Catalina Island.
K69 - Dianna ... is one of the females. She was removed as a chick from her nest at Union Bay, Vancouver Island, BC in 1986 and was hacked from the Sweetwater Hacktower on Catalina Island.
*No Wing Tag* - Wray ... is the other female. She was removed as a chick from her nest in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, BC in 1986 and she was hacked at the same place and time with Dianna.
This is a unique nest because of the fact that 3 eagles have remained together to breed and care for young since 1992. The original male with Dianna & Wray disappeared in the Spring of 2006 but was soon replaced by K01, a much younger male.
Update March 2008... Dianna was last seen on the West End nest on March 7, 2008 and hasn't come back since so it's now just Superman & Wray. IWS has had no visual sightings of Dianna. We all hope and pray that she is OK and has found her own mate to raise her own family.
This year Wray laid 2 eggs and they were collected for incubation/hatching and 2 fake eggs were left in their place. One egg was lost and the second egg/chick ended up needing intervention to get the chick (who was stuck to the inside of the eggshell membrane) out of its egg.
A few days before Dr. Sharpe returned Westie/Miracle back to her nest, it was discovered that Wray had layed a third egg and it had hatched naturally!!! What a surprise that was!
Parents of:
2007
K72 - Earth
K73 - Wind
K74 - Fire
Here's a nice slideshow and video of the 3 chicks being banded this year by Dr. Peter Sharpe and his assistants .. West End 2007 Banding Day
2008
K65 - Westie/Miracle
K67 - Surprise (Natural hatch and a complete surprise!!!)
2009
K97 - Joy
K98 - Faith

And as part of the background of the nest - here are a couple of pictures showing where the nest is located:
Just a little bit different than the nest tree at the Maine nest! _________________ 2010 Eaglet Info |

To those of you not familiar with this nest.........looking at the pictures JudyB posted, can you imagine how a deer would have been up there? Amazing!

I was quite proud to learn a few months ago that Dianna and Wray both hatched near where I live on Vancouver Island. They must now be nearly 22 years old and still producing healthy chicks. (even if their eggshells need a little help ) Good for them! |

This is a very fascinating background of this nest. I will have to pay more attention to it this year. Thanks Lori and JudyB. _________________ Cat Lover and now Eagle Addict |

Lori, thank you so much for starting a separate topic for this very special nest!
JudyB, thank you for including this nest in your compilation website. I can't imagine what we would do without the work you've done to compile all of this information for us, especially now with so many nests to follow! Please let us know when your new site is accessible. |

I think it might be a different Catalina Island - I may be confusing my pirates, but I thought Captain Kidd was in the Caribbean.
Definitely an interesting story though! _________________ 2010 Eaglet Info |

You are right, JudyB. The article states that the island they are calling Catalina is located next to the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. So confusing sometimes when different places have the same name. Just today on another forum, Santa Cruz Island was being confused with Santa Cruz the city on the mainland, especially since both are in California. Then there is Chehalis, BC where the Hancock underwater salmon cam is located. Today that area was also confused by someone as being the Chehalis that is located near Seattle in Washington State.....and on and on it goes. _________________ Cat Lover and now Eagle Addict |

Well, sisters Dianna & Wray have been having a few tiffs lately on their nest. Seems Dianna may want Superman for herself this year and this weekend she kept defending the nest from Wray or kicking her off the nest.
Dianna finally allowed Wray onto the nest with her yesterday and they have been together now on the nest today with no squabbles... so far
Wray came first to the nest this morning
Then came Dianna
Then they both were there together

Well, I'm glad they've made up. After so many years sharing the nest, it would be a shame if one was kicked off.
